Super Slick — ready for the summer
ALONG with the summer temperature, selector-turned-singjay Super Slick believes things are definitely heating up for his career.
The artiste, whose real name is Omar Turner, is pleased with the progress of his debut single Peace Warrior released in November last year, which he says has been getting steady attention on radio. Its accompanying music video is also receiving rotation on various local music video channels.
Super Slick, who hails from Kingston, is a graduate of Liguanea College and says he found his passion for music from an early age. However, it was during his teenage years that he began selecting on a family-owned sound system.
“Music I believe is in my blood stream it tends to soothe my soul so I would often hurry home from school in the evenings just to hone my skills,” the young singjay told the Observer in a recent interview.
As a selector Slick says he had the privilege of ‘juggling’ at Uptown Mondays, Weddy Weddy, Early Tuesdays along with other community dances. Still, the artiste says he felt as if he was not utilising his full musical potential. In 2009, Slick says he was introduced to local producer Kevin James by a friend. “I was excited to record my first single Peace Warrior as it meant that I was stepping up the musical ladder,” he said. Since releasing Peace Warrior, Super Slick has released Mi She Want, Storm Loving, Lovely Rose and Love is the Order.
“I am not afraid of taking chances so there is no turning back for me. I am doing music to last beyond a lifetime. That is, I want my songs to be fresh in the mind of people decades from now” Slick told the Observer.
Any collaborations in the near future? The singjay, who hails Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Beres Hammond and Jay Z as his musical role models, says he is anticipating a ‘wicked’ collab with a chart-topping dancehall artiste. “We are working on an hit,” he said smiling.
Super Slick is currently in the studios working on his debut mixed tape to be released later this year.
