My Kingston – Berisford Grey
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
Taking overcrowded buses from Half-Way-Tree to Kingston College.
What do you miss most when you are not in Kingston?
It’s really “who” — my wife and daughter and hanging out with my friends.
If you could change one thing about Jamaica, what would it be and why?
I would increase access to higher education because it’s only through education and training that we will be able to create a productive and prosperous society.
Which living person do you most admire and why?
Apple’s co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs, because he is the visionary of our age. He has transformed technology, entertainment and design. He’s the definitive example of the power of ideas and intuition.
Which character in fiction do you most identify with?
Will Smith playing real-life entrepreneur and stockbroker Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness — victory against all odds.
Share with us the title of the last book you read.
Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin — it is a very interesting book that reinforces that leaders and high performers consistently give effort beyond merely what is required and are very focused on making strategically correct decisions.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Adele’s Rolling In The Deep; her voice turns lyrics into emotions.
What is your most treasured possession?
None, come to think of it. But I thank God for my BlackBerry!
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
There is no perfect happiness but I will settle for comfort with self, a happy family life and most importantly, good health.
What are your current projects?
My main focus is on establishing Scotia Investments Capital Markets Unit as the leading investment banking outfit in Jamaica.
What is your present state of mind?
Energised and optimistic.
What is your favourite journey?
There was a very adventurous road trip from Brussels to Venice that included stops in several towns in France, the Alps and Northern Italy.
What upsets you?
Arrogance.
What inspires you?
The prospect of converting new ideas into tangible outcomes that benefit businesses and society. My job involves a lot of this.
Name the last three places you visited on holidays.
Washington, DC, South Beach and the Bahamas.
Where would you take a client you’d like to impress?
Any restaurant at The Marketplace — there’s something for every palate, and a nice energy there as well.
As a Jamaican working in Europe, describe your proudest moment.
I was very fortunate to have landed a job in investment banking and in particular, securitisation, which was the buzzword in the European capital markets. I was totally naïve about how much I needed to learn, and how difficult it was to convince a company to do a securitisation deal. So my proudest moment was when I won my first securitisation mandate to do a US$150-million Mortgage-Backed Bond for a Belgian Bank.
What is your philosophy?
Destiny is not by chance but by choice.
