Technomoto to boom field in St Leger
A reduced field of 12 headed by Derby winner Technomoto is set to bring the curtain down on the native-bred Triple Crown Series with the 85th running of the $3,900,000 Boom Energy Jamaica St Leger (Gr 1) for the Lonsdale Challenge Cup at Caymanas Park today at 5:25 pm. First post at 12:10 pm.
The event is the highlight of the Wisynco Group-sponsored 12-race card and will be contested over 2,000 metres. Also included on the programme is the historic all female race where six overseas riders will join with local female rider Georgina Sergeon to battle their male counterparts for a jockeys’ title.
Following his demolition job in the Cal’s Jamaica Derby three weeks ago, the Elias Haloute and Stephan Narinesingh-owned Technomoto returns in high spirits with an aim to mop up the tail end of the three-year-old Classic races to set sights on a possible Horse-Of-The-Year shot with the rich Superstakes event still to come.
The manner in which the Anthony Nunes-conditioned bay colt by Western Classic out of Sea Treaty (Law Of The Sea) won the Derby, it will take a betting cynic to oppose him today, even though it looks safe to say that he will have to work a little harder to win this. With a lot more speedy ones in the line-up the tactic which trainer Nunes and stable rider Dick Cardenas adopt must be completely different from the one in the Derby victory run.
A close look the preparation of Technomoto suggests that this has been taken in to consideration and if this were so then winning the third leg of the Triple Crown looks a foregone conclusion.
Commanding Chief has looked mighty impressive in his two career runs to date and could really create a big impression on the outcome of the final Classic event of the season.
His preparation is not quite as impressive as that of Technomoto, but his performances in his races are awesome. In his first race he trundled his opponents with a frightening 1:19.2 minutes for 1,00 metres and won by 11 1/4 lengths not doing much. As to confirm suspicion that he is one of special talent, the chestnut gelding by War Marshall out of She’s Knows Beau (Beau Genius) and trained by Everald Francis returned a month later to brush aside non-winners of two this time by 11 1/2 lengths to win over 1,600 metres in a smart 1:39.3 minutes, which is the fastest time recorded for the distance at any level for the season.
Jockey Paul Francis has been elected again guide him in his most important event to date.
Jet Setter and Big Man Boyu, who tracked Technomoto back to the winning post in the Derby, could also impact positively on the result with the distance reduced.
Big Man Boyu is a chestnut son of War Marshall and by breeding will enjoy 2,000 metres. Owned by Trinidadian Baskaran Bassawh, he finished just behind Jet Setter in the Derby . However, trainer Gary Subratie has summoned overseas-based Allen Maragh to take over the reins from Trinidad and Tobago-based Panamanian jockey Nobel Abrego and another capital effort is anticipated.
