Jamaica reach final four with whipping of T&T
SINGAPORE (CMC) — Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls will face Australia in today’s semi-finals of the World Netball Championship after easily disposing of Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago in the quarter-finals here yesterday.
The number one Caribbean side used a dominant first quarter to overwhelm the Trinidadians and emerge with an uncomplicated 79-42 win at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
They were powered by goal-shooter Jhaniele Fowler who shot 42 from 43 attempts in a sterling second half performance, while Romelda Aiken scored 19 from 22 and Anna-Kay Griffiths, 17 from 19.
For T&T, goal-shooter Anastacia Wilson netted 20 goals form 26 attempts and was backed up by goal-attack Joelisa Cooper with 15 from 20.
As usual, Jamaica started strongly, rushing to a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretching that advantage to 36-19 at the half-time whistle.
Despite their healthy lead, Jamaica continued to press in the third quarter and outscored their opponents 21-10, to be 57-29 up at the start of the final stanza.
The result by then was not in doubt and Jamaica easily wrapped up the game with little fuss.
There was no such luck for Barbados in their play-off contest as they went down to Fiji (48-49) in a hotly contested encounter.
They trailed throughout the match and not even a strong final-quarter performance could put them over the line.
Fiji rushed to a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, and despite being outscored by Barbados in the second, held a 26-24 lead at half-time.
A sound third quarter saw Fiji enhance their lead at the start of the fourth, 39-34, and even though Barbados bounced back to level the scores with six minutes left and take the lead two minutes later, the South Pacific side stormed back at the end to sneak the victory.
Lydia Bishop led Barbados with 26 goals from 32 attempts and was supported by Nikita Piggott with 22 from 24 attempts.
For Fiji, Afa Rusivakula was on top of her game with 33 from 45 attempts with Maria Lutua getting 11 from 15.
Australia, meanwhile, defeated Malawi 58-44 in their quarter-final to set up the meeting with the Jamaicans.
New Zealand and England will meet in today’s other semi-final after easy wins over South Africa and Northern Island, respectively.
