Damion Johnson cops top 16 title at BNS Amateur Tennis Champs
Damion Johnson copped the men’s top 16 title as the Bank of Nova Scotia Amateur Tennis Championship and Professional Tournament culminated at the Liguanea Club last Saturday.
Johnson received his championship trophy, gift certificate and took home
the top prize of $50,000. Dwayne Pagon was the runner-up, also receiving his trophy and $30,000.
Johnson defeated Pagon 6-2, 6-1 to take the top spot.
Meanwhile, the semi-finalists did not go home empty handed either. Dominic Pagon and Matthew Rodrigues each received $20,000. The quarter-finalists of Brenton White, Daniel Harris, Dane Vernon and Karil Kasyano also received $15,000, along with their trophies.
In the BNS Open Amateur Event, Dominic Pagon and Dwayne Pagon defeated Damion Johnson and Daniel Harris 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the men’s class one doubles title.
In the men’s class two doubles event Leighton Burton and Lloyd Nelson were 6-4, 6-1 winners over Ransford Hamilton and Lee Oakley to claim the title.
Meanwhile, Garth Darby and Franklyn Grennion were 7-5, 6-1 winners over Marlon Brown and Andrew Madden to take men”s class three doubles title.
In mixed doubles action Donovan Crumbie and Shellita Haughton defeated Matthew Rodriguez and MichaelAnn Denton 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Monique Todd, vice-president, Marketing, Public and Corporate Affairs at Scotiabank said the tournament was very important for the development and transition of the juniors in the island.
“It is great to be involved in the tournament. It was exciting and we are pleased with the development at the youth level,” Todd said.
