Jamaica seek 3rd Caribbean Basketball Champs win
Defending champions and unbeaten Jamaica will go for their third consecutive win tonight when they take on the US Virgin Islands at 7:00 in the 21st Caribbean Basketball Championship (CBC) at the Kendall Isaacs Gymnasium in Nassau, The Bahamas.
On Monday, 24-year-old Garfield Blair scored a game-high 18 points, supported by Ryan Reid (10 points), for Jamaica to drub Guyana 75-43. This win follows Saturday’s 92-78 beating of Antigua where Akeem Scott featured with a game-high 33 points.
In the Guyana encounter, Jamaica led 21-5 in the first quarter, 44-14 at half-time, and 65-20 at the end of the third quarter.
Patrick Ewing Jr, who played for 13 minutes, contributed eight points, while Reid, Brian Grant and Andrew Whilby grabbed nine, eight, and seven rebounds, respectively.
Rodwell Fortune led the way for Guyana with 14 points, followed by Dwayne Roberts with 11 points.
After two matches, Scott is Jamaica’s leading scorer with a total of 37 points at an average of 18.5 with Blair next on a total 34 points at an average of 17.0.
In other matches on Monday, US Virgin Islands beat Bermuda 66-63, and The Bahamas crushed St Vincent and the Grenadines 106-58.
Jamaica have participated in the CBC Championship eight times, winning the inaugural competition in 1981, as well as taking the titles in 1996, 2006, and the last one in 2009.
The top three teams in the CBC Championship will advance to next year’s CentroBasket Championship, where the top 10 teams in the Central America and Caribbean zone will compete for honours.
