Media needs balance
Dear Editor,
Observer columnist Claude Robinson should know that Jamaica’s media landscape has for long been dominated by people of varying political persuasions. Therefore, it is only fair that these people when commenting on political and current affairs declare political bias, whether or not they present an “objective” opinion. A very false impression, however, is being given that G2K is going after media personnel in general. From the TV news clips that I saw and some radio interviews that I heard recently this does not appear to be the case.
I grew up watching and listening to current affairs programmes and it is just recently that I found out that one commentator is a former press secretary to a particular prime minister. I always sensed that this person was sympathetic to a particular political party, but I would have appreciated it if the presenter had sought to highlight this important biographical detail. The same is true for another who by now many current affairs-conscious Jamaicans should know is a seasoned campaigner of sorts.
I say let us get on with getting some sense of balance in media land. Every commentator is entitled to hold their position but it would be great if they not present themselves as sheep in wolves’ clothing. It is simply misleading.
