Saragossa lands GA ‘Sarge’ Bucknor feature
Saragossa demolished a good field of runners to win the $735,000 GA ‘Sarge’ Bucknor Memorial Cup Open Allowance feature by 1 1/4 lengths at Caymanas Park yesterday.
However, the day belonged to the ever-green 10-year-old grey gelding Nasatol, who won his 35th race and in the process established himself as the winningest horse at Caymanas Park.
Owned by Gilbert Khwalsingh and running among $450,000 – $400,000 claimers, three-year-olds upward and native-bred five-year-olds (NW4), Nasatol, ridden by Dane Nelson, ran 1,000 metres straight in a time of 59.0 seconds to register his 20th career win over the course, and eclipsed the record of 34 wins held by Master Blaster.
Trained by Cashbert Khwalsingh in his last four races, the ageing son of Pat N Jac won the event by 1 1/4 lengths in the field of eight.
Meanwhile, Saragossa installed the 8-5 favourite in competitive field of 16, hit top speed after entering the final 100 metres and even though darting to the left in full flight, was well ahead of the field to get the better of the fast finishing 10-1 chance Sir Jaadu Baba along the running rails under claiming apprentice Robert Halledeen.
Trained by Anthony Nunes for owners Elias Haloute & Amber Stewart, Saragossa was winning his fourth race of the season from seven starts, three of which came over 1,000 metres straight.
Ridden by title chasing jockey Dick Cardenas, Saragossa stalked the pace as the 47-1 chance Diabolical Kid set the early blistering fractions of 22.3 and 44.4 for the first quarter and half mile, respectively. And with no Super Dave to seriously challenge for parity from here on it was all Saragossa.
Palace Gold, well supported at odds of 5-1 and ridden by Oniel Mullings, was one-half length back third, while Diabolical Kid, who was running for the first time in a little one year, completed the frame ridden by leading jockey Shane Ellis.
A bay colt by Saint Appeal out of Pretty Sammy Girl (Williamstown) bred at Ham Stables Ltd, Saragossa was winning for the fifth time from nine career starts and he earned $390,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $2,229,350 lifetime.
Halledeen rode his first triple since becoming a licensed apprentice to take riding honours on the 10-race card. He opened with the 6-1 shot Rhea Marie for trainer Ryan Darby in the fifth race and drove Bunker Dust to win the sixth for owner trainer Lawrence Freemantle.
