T&T set for defence of regional one-day title
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Trinidad & Tobago will be looking for their third straight title victory, when the WICB Women’s Regional One-day competition opens today here.
Eight teams will play in two zones in the one-week competition, which concludes next Sunday with the Grand Final at Kensington Oval.
T&T, just back from a tour of Britain in preparation for the tournament, will face stiff competition in Group A, where they will play Jamaica, Guyana, and Grenada.
“We have been training very hard,” said T&T and West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira.
“Our preparations have been going very well, and we have been preparing well as a team, and have spent a lot of time together, so I am very confident as captain leading this team.”
She added: “We believe Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and St Vincent & the Grenadines are the teams for us to watch closely.
“But we are going to play each match as though it was a final because we just don’t know what the other teams will come up with — we are the champions and everyone will be coming hard at us.
“We have four current West Indies Women’s players, and four past West Indies Women’s players, so we have a team packed with experience, and we are confident.”
Group B comprises last year’s runners-up St Vincent & the Grenadines and St Lucia — both regional Women’s One-day champions of recent vintage — as well as Dominica and hosts Barbados.
In the opening round, T&T will face Jamaica, under the leadership of West Indies Women’s all-rounder Stafanie Taylor, at The Brewery, and Guyana, led by West Indies Women’s star Shemaine Campbelle, will meet Grenada at the Desmond Haynes Oval in Group A.
In Group B, hosts Barbados, led by West Indies fast-medium bowler Shakera Selman, will play SVG, led by West Indies Women’s star Cordel Jack, at Kensington Oval, and St Lucia tackle Dominica at the Pine Basin.
