Crystal United march on in Senior League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions Crystal United continued to steamroll the competition in Zone A of the St James Netball Association’s Hunger Buster/Impact Auto Senior League after a 47-16 drubbing of Starlight Juniors on Sunday at the Montego Bay Boys Club as the return round began.
Rita Spence scored 23 goals as Crystal, who a week earlier had won the end-of-round final over 12-Star at the same venue and ran their regular season record to five straight wins.
The result improved Crystal’s points tally to 15, five more than second-placed Blazers, who beat Pacers Juveniles, 43-28, on Sunday in the second game of the double-header.
Crystal were all over Starlight from the start, racing to an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and were up by double digits, 17-4, at half time.
Amalia Stewart and Gina Haughton both scored seven goals; Sharon Woodstock scored six, while Carlalee Tinglin scored four goals for the winners, who had won the first-round game, 50-29.
Tara Heaven scored 12 goals from 33 attempts for Starlight Juniors, while Noreen Wilson added four goals.
After drawing 33-all in the first round, Blazers came from behind to beat Pacers Juveniles by 15 goals, 43-28, thanks to 36 buckets from Shadian Hemmings.
Pacers won the first quarter, 8-5, but Blazers edged in front at half-time, 19-18, then dominated the second half, 25-10, to run out easy winners.
Nickesha Ferron with five goals and Monique Bingham with three also scored for Blazers, while Georgia Reid led Pacers with 18 goals and Shanice Rhodes’ seven and Danielle Ellis’ three also scored.
Meanwhile last Wednesday, beaten end-of-round finalists 12-stars were held 25-all by last placed Starlight in a Zone B game, also played at Boys Club.
The teams were tied at the end of each quarter. Shanice Howe scored 18 goals to lead Starlight, while Crystalee Carter led 12 Star with 16.
Meanwhile this afternoon, Pacers and Sting will meet in a Zone B game at the Boys Club court, starting at 5:00.
