Jamaicans set for battle in Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships
FIVE riders will represent Jamaica at the two-day Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Salinas, Puerto Rico, which will begin today.
Top juniors Shacquille Sinclair of St Catherine and Oshane Williams of St James will lead the Jamaican charge in the time trial and road race in the 17-18 age category, where they will be joined by Dervin Myers of Portland.
Chosen by performances in the Jamaica Cycling Federation racing series and the National Championships, the three will prove their mettle in the 20-kilometre (12-mile) time trial and the 99km (60m) road race.
The other two cyclists, Jermar Brissett and Owen Cardorza Jr, both of St James, will participate in the 15-16 category and will compete in the 15km (9m) time trial and 66km (40m) road race.
First vice-president of the Jamaica Cycling Federation, Iona Wynter Parks, said a sixth cyclist, Andre Jackson, was chosen but was too young and would have to wait another year to become eligible.
Jamaica will compete against riders from Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Trinidad, and hosts Puerto Rico.
All five Jamaicans will be competing in the Junior Caribbean Championships for the first time, though Sinclair, who will captain the team, and Williams have competed against the best in the world when they took part in the Tour de I’Abitibi/UCI Nations Cup in Canada last month.
