Lisa’s Quick Fix

Under the Dryer

We’re Under the Dryer this week with the fab clients of Lisa’s Full Service Salon, who popped in for a brief styling stint as they caught up over exotic J Wray & Nephew cocktails…

(Photos: Garfield Robinson & Marlon Reid)

Stylishly Sculpted

Christine Messado — full-time mum

Christine likes her short haircut because it highlights her features and is easily styled — a definite plus for a full-time mum. She pops in today for a routine texturise, trim and style job, and Lisa immediately gets to work…

The Routine:

Christine’s hair is first rinsed to remove build-up, then Lisa applies Mizani texturiser to her hair and follows up with the shampoo and conditioner from the same line. Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner is then worked through, along with Frizz Ease Clearly Defined style-holding gel by John Frieda, which is used to sculpt her hair into a stylish look. Lisa explains that no oil sheen is needed after hair is air dried as both products help to boost shine.

Christine’s Take:

“My hair has been so much easier to handle since I’ve started to texturise it. Lisa suggested it, and I’m glad I tried it because it really works. I also love the style of the cut, it’s chic yet funky, and I can wear my hair straight or curly if I want to.”

Silky Smooth

Shelly-Ann Chung — resident make-up artist, Sportsmax

The Brazilian keratin treatment has worked well for Shelly-Ann, as she finds that it makes her hair much more manageable, and keeps it looking great. She visits today for a quick spin in the styling chair before heading to work…

The Routine:

Since her hair is already clean (Lisa shampooed it two days prior), Shelly-Ann only needs to have her hair styled. Lisa gets to work by spritzing her tresses with Matrixx Sleek Look smoothing system ahead of a light blow-out and flat iron job. She then mists her hair with Design Essentials Reflections liquid shine for an added boost.

Shelly-Ann’s Take:

“I love my hair! It always looks great when Lisa styles it.”

Height & Volume

Alicia Wee Tom — special projects consultant

Alicia is growing out an edgy pixie cut, so she likes to visit Lisa every week so they can experiment with different looks after her routine shampoo.

The Routine:

Hair is first shampooed with Redken Smooth Down, then Lisa towel-dries her hair and works in a dollop of Jane Carter Solutions Condition & Sculpt cream. She then blow-dries her hair with a round brush and finger-styles it in a bouffant-type ‘do to create height and the illusion of fuller volume. Design Essentials Reflections Liquid Shine is then misted on to complete the look.

Alicia’s Take:

“I like the look. It’s very different from what I would usually do with my hair. Lisa and I try new looks each week because I’m growing out the cut, so we try to get playful with it so that it still looks stylish.”

So Sleek

Dr Natalie Muir-Young — dentist

While some women like the versatility and convenience of shorter looks, others like Natalie enjoy rocking longer hairdos. She no longer resides in Jamaica, but whenever she’s visiting, she tells our team that a visit to her trusty hairstylist Lisa Hutchinson is always on the agenda. Today she just wants a ‘touch up’ with the flat iron, and Lisa is happy to take on the task.

The Routine:

Lisa first blow-dries Natalie’s hair “to get that sleek and straight effect”, then spritzes it with Matrixx Sleek Look smoothing system ahead of flat-ironing for smoothness. A light holding spray is needed to keep hair strands in place, so Design Essentials Formations styling spritz is used. Design Essentials Reflections liquid shine oil sheen spray is then used for a radiant shine.

Natalie’s Take:

“It’s smooth, sleek and frizz-free just the way I like it, and the colour, which Lisa did two weeks ago, is also fabulous. Whenever I’m on the island a visit to Lisa’s is a must-do.”

Hide & Chic

Allison Porter Spaulding — director, Porter Brothers Ltd

Although Allison likes her hair at its current length, she has decided to grow out the bob cut soon, as she is getting bored with the look. She tells Under The Dryer that she is now expecting her fourth child, and since her hair tends to break during pregnancy, she will keep the bob for a bit longer in order to conceal the thin areas. She pops in to Lisa’s today for a quick styling job ahead of her afternoon engagement.

The Routine:

Since Allison shampooed her hair prior to the visit, Lisa mists with Matrixx Sleek Look smoothing system spray ahead of flat-ironing to smooth the strands. She then mists her hair with a light holding spray – Design Essentials Formations styling spritz, and the Reflections liquid shine spray from the same brand, to complete the look.

Allison’s Take:

“My hair is currently breaking terribly, but due to the way Lisa styles it, one can’t really tell. I’ll maintain this look throughout my pregnancy as it’s easy to maintain, but afterwards I’ll change it up because I get bored with it easily… I’m thinking of going long with some highlighted extensions.”

Wrap & Roll

Melissa Richardson — medical representative, Glaxo Smithkline

A low-maintenance and stylish pixie cut à la Halle Berry is perfect for Melissa. She enjoys hairstyles that she can play around with for different looks, and is happy that her fab stylist Lisa always aims to please.

The Routine:

Her hair is first cleansed with Mizani Renew Strength moisturising shampoo and Reconstructing Masque conditioner. Lisa then wraps it with Jane Carter Solutions Wrap & Roll foaming conditioner, which she explains “doesn’t cause build-up and makes the hair soft and smooth”, then places her under the dryer. When this is finished she removes Melissa and gives her a light trim, then creates light flips with a ceramic flat iron ahead of styling with the fingers. Design Essentials Formations styling spritz and Reflections liquid shine spray are misted on for a light hold and added gloss.

Klippin’ Cute

Heather Quarrie — tax officer, Inland Revenue Department

Heather recently had her hair cut in long layers, so she returns today for a trim and style ahead of hitting the road with her friends later on.

The Routine:

Lisa shampoos her hair with Redken Smooth Down, then generously applies the Heat Glide thermal protection spray from the same line ahead of blow-drying. A ceramic flat iron is then used to smooth the strands, and Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Cristalli Liquidi hair polisher is misted on as a finishing spray.

Heather’s Take:

“I’m loving the long layers, it’s a really fabulous look.”

Tamara’s Quick Fix

Tamara Lake-Mair — make-up artist

A loyal client of Lisa’s, Tamara had the keratin protein treatment done, so she pops in every so often for maintenance and styling. Today she just requires a refreshing blow-out to prevent her hair from looking limp.

The Routine:

Lisa works a dollop of Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner through her tresses to make the styling process easier. “It’s lightweight, so it can be used with the keratin treatment as it doesn’t leave any build-up on the hair,” she tells our team. Tamara then receives a trim and Lisa then blow-dries her hair with a round brush. “No hair polisher is needed, as the keratin treatment gives hair a natural shine,” she shares.

Tamara’s Take:

“I love the keratin treatment. It’s great, and my hair is now so much easier to maintain and style, and frizz is virtually non-existent.”
