A no-no
Dear Editor,
I want to congratulate our team in Daegu for a wonderful world-beating performance which made this little country of ours very proud.
However, I am somewhat concerned about the improper handling of our flag and the disrespect of our National Anthem by at least two of our star athletes at the championships.
Usain Bolt is undoubtedly the greatest thing to have happened to track and field (athletics) for many, many years. He is a superstar. But if he doesn’t know, the powers that be need to teach him the proper way to handle the flag of the country. After he won the 200m race, he was handed a Jamaican flag for him to wear around the track with pride. What did he do? He folded the flag like a piece of dirty cloth in his hand, then proceeded to knot it around his neck. It was pathetic.
No, Mr Bolt, that is a no-no. You are to open the flag from end to end behind your head and shoulders and wear it proudly for the world to see.
Mr Editor, certain antics by Mr Bolt and Mr Blake were also noticed during the playing of the National Anthem. This is blatant disrespect and should be condemned in no uncertain terms.
These men have done Jamaica proud. I am certain that in the future their handlers will see to it that they are taught the proper way of dealing with national symbols.
