Jet Setter for War Zone Sprint Trophy
Winston Kong’s own and home-bred chestnut gelding, Jet Setter, the 2011 Jamaica Derby runner-up, looks set to continue his winning form when he takes on 10 rivals in the $845,000 War Zone Sprint Trophy Graded Stakes principal feature at Caymanas Park today. First post at 12:45 pm.
Carded as the principal feature of the two-trophy 10-race card, the Restricted Stakes quick dash over 1,100 metres for native-bred three-year-olds, is scheduled to go off at approximately 4:55 pm.
The $715,000 Donald Tankoy Memorial Cup, a maiden condition race for native-bred fillies in two divisions, represents the other trophy race on the programme. It is to be contested over 1,300 metres with division one scheduled for at 2:50 pm and division two at approximately and hour later .
Both divisions have attracted 11 starters with Region De Naskra, Never Give Up, Getupstandup, along with Genniethebutcher as the leading contenders in division one, while Ribbon In The Sky, Fulljoy, Dalla Fifty and Dancing Gold look safe to do so in division two.
In the War Zone Sprint, the penultimate event on the programme, followed by the $715,000 Alex’s Imports “Dig Out Handicap” closing canto, the chestnut gelded son of Region Of Merit looks unbeatable at this stage even when saddled with top weight. But much consideration ought to be given to recent winner over the trip The Primemerlinian, so too The Messenger whom he beat at the same distance when opening his winning account on New Year’s Day.
Both have shown some improvement in their performances since and cannot be taken for granted. These two, along with Blender and Turbine, who has also felt the sting of Jet Setter when they last met over 1,400 metres, have been running consistently well in their races.
Being attacking rivals in this short and dynamic sprint, jockey Dane Nelson cannot afford to be too over confident aboard Jet Setter as this fairly competitive line-up also includes the highly thought of and versatile Hermoso Amigo.
Bred and owned by Wassel Burnett and trained by Noel Ennevor, chestnut colt Hermoso Amigo was one of the prime candidates for the Lotto Classic and the Jamaica Derby, but ran below expectations in both.
However, Jet Setter, prepared for the races by champion and leading conditioner Wayne DaCosta, who was the conditioner of War Zone throughout his racing career, will report well trained for the shorter distance. One of the gifted sons of the broodmare Executive Profile (Dispersal), who also is the dam of Horse-Of-The-Year Ahwhofah and the once promising, The Gummer. Jet Setter himself has shown a bit of class and could begin to prove his worth at this level with a fourth win from his 12th career start.
