KC outscore depleted Penwood 6-3
DESPITE scoring a hat-trick, Penwood High’s Clifford Shaw saw his team demolished, 6-3, by Kingston College (KC) in Group F of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup at Cloverly Park yesterday.
Shaw netted in the 29, 59th and 90th minutes, the last two of which were penalties, while the first was a nice glancing header from a corner kick.
But the highly-rated KC were not to be denied and were in total control for the entire game, especially after Penwood’s Javaughn Carty was ejected in 37th minute and they were reduced to 10 men.
KC, the 14-time winners, had six different scorers netting three goals in each half.
Playing on their newly-laid turf at North Street, which still has some way to go, the famed Purples got off to a brilliant start, courtesy of their two national players.
National Under-17 utility player Romario Williams opened the scoring with a well struck free-kick in the seventh minute before National Under-20 defender Jhamie Hyde, playing midfield, headed home two minutes later.
Shaw’s header reduced the deficit for Penwood, but Jorghino James restored KC’s two-goal advantage, tapping home after goalkeeper Kevron Scott failed to hold onto a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
At that point, former West Indies cricketer and Jamaican footballer Richard “Danny Jerms” Austin made his prediction that KC would score seven times and also predicted that it would be a North Street final between old rivals KC and St George’s College.
“Quote me, remember I tell you it will be a Roper Cup final. The two team dem big,” said the former Arnett Gardens star.
However, Austin would have been left a mite disappointed as KC would only score three more times in the second half.
Penwood again reduced the deficit courtesy of a penalty in the 59th minute to make it 3-2, but KC made the one-man advantage count and went into overdrive, scoring three goals in 12 minutes.
Jason Greenland powered home through a wall of players in the 73rd minute after an initial free-kick pinballed around and fell nicely at his feet.
Two substitutes got on the scoresheet — Jevaughn Samuels and Dorvil Jackson — who completed the rout in the 78th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
Meanwhile, in other Group B games yesterday, Tivoli Gardens defeated neighbours Denham Town, 2-1, and Campion College and Papine High battled to a 1-1 draw.
In Group D, St Jago blanked Kingston Technical 2-0, and Cumberland were held to a 0-0 draw by Pembroke Hall.
Group G saw the first game between Jose Marti and STATHS postponed because of the inclement weather. But St Mary’s College had dry ground and edged Oberlin High 1-0 in the only match in the group.
The game between Bridgeport High and Kingston High was not played as the latter have withdrawn from the competition.
