Crystal United lifts Hunger Buster/Impact Auto Senior League title
MONTEGO BAY, St James – CRYSTAL United confirmed their dominance in St James netball after completing an unblemished season on Sunday, when they beat Blazers by 26 goals, (55-29) in the finals of the Hunger Buster/Impact Auto Senior League at the Montego Bay Boys Club.
Multi-talented Ladonna Lamonth, who was voted the top camper at the recent Star Search basketball camp, was almost unstoppable pouring in 41 goals from 44 attempts, as Crystal retained their title and took home the trophy and the $30,000 first prize.
Last season’s beaten finalist, Twelve Star, who were upset by a single goal in the semi-finals by Blazers, asserted themselves in the third-place play-off, beating Angels A 42-31 to take third place and $10,000.
Blazers, who were seeking their second title in three seasons, started well and held Crystal United 11-11 after the first quarter but managed just 18 more goals over the next three quarters as the champions turned up the defensive intensity.
Crystal was also outstanding at the offensive end as they missed just five shots all afternoon with Carlalee Tinglin scoring 10 goals from 12 attempts while Rita Spence was perfect with four from four.
The champions came back strongly in the second period to outscore Blazers 16-7 for a 27-18 lead at half-time and increased it at the end of the third where they lead 42-23.
Shadian Hemmings scored all 29 goals for Blazers from 37 attempts.
In the first game, Twelve Star earned third place thanks to a balanced attack of Jodian McIntosh, who scored 25 goals from 45 attempts and Crystalee Carter’s 17 from 27 as Nicole Fletcher scored 28 of Angels’ 31 goals.
Twelve Star took charge of the game early, leading 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and was up 26-16 at half-time before cruising to the win.
