Ex-cop on murder charge stays in jail
WALTER Spike, the former police constable who went on the run for eight years after allegedly shooting to death a nine-year-old girl, was again remanded into police custody yesterday when he appeared in the Gun Court.
Attorney Peter Champagnie was yesterday expected to make a bail application on Spike’s behalf in the Gun Court Division of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court, but postponed the application until his client’s next appearance on September 23.
Spike is facing a charge of murder for the July 2003 shooting death of Renee Lyons. The child was struck in the head by a bullet while playing in her front yard in Majesty Gardens, Kingston.
Lyons’ shooting triggered a massive demonstration with residents calling for the policeman to be brought to justice.
But before he could be charged, Spike fled the island while the investigation into the shooting was in progress. He was held on August 25 after being deported from the United States.
