D’Cup leaders set to advance
PONDSIDE, Hanover — Two schools, including defending champions Rusea’s High, could secure their places in the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup when action continues this afternoon with 28 return-round games.
Rusea’s, who lead Zone B with a perfect 24 points from eight wins, and St Mary Technical, who head Zone D with 13 points, could secure their places among the 24 team that will advance, while a third school, Cedric Titus High of Zone C, could move to within a point of securing a berth.
Eleven schools have already been eliminated from Inter-Zone contention, while another six could join them today.
Meanwhile, 34 goals were scored in the six games yesterday, with Clarendon College whipping Porus High, 10-0, in Zone H but are still third in the group behind Edwin Allen, who beat Alston High, 6-0, and Lennon, who were idle.
Clement Brown led the way for Clarendon with five goals to take his tally to 11.
Romaine Morrison scored a hat-trick for Edwin Allen, while Onique Clarke scored two.
Denbigh stayed in first place in Zone I with an 8-0 whipping of Central High with hat-tricks from Carnell Robinson and Rohan Richards.
Glenmuir moved to joint second place on 16 points with a 6-0 win over Bustamante High.
Today, Rusea’s will travel to Pond Side to face Merlene Ottey High, whom they beat 6-0 in the first round. A win, coupled with anything but a similar result for Anchovy High, who will travel to Green Island, will see them advancing.
St Mary Technical, who have won their last three games while conceding one goal, will face last-placed Tacky and a win should see them through as second-placed St Mary High, on eight points, and third-placed Iona, on five, will also meet.
Any result between St Mary High and Iona will see St Mary Technical advancing, provided they get three points.
Cedric Titus, who are the only other team other than Rusea’s to have a perfect win record, will move to within a point of securing a place in the next round if they beat Ocho Rios at Drax Hall.
Old Harbour, winners of their last four games, could create some space at the top of Zone J when they travel to Tacius Golding in what could be the game of the day at Bodles.
Old Harbour have scored 13 unanswered goals in their last two games, both against Ewarton High, and will go into the game full of confidence, but will face a Tacius Golding team that has not lost at home all season.
