I’m ready, says Daley
REGGAE Boy Keammar Daley says he’s ready to assume the role as the team’s creative midfield solution, hopefully ending a long search by the technical staff to find that rare talent.
Both of Jamaica’s senior coaches — Theodore Whitmore and his Brazilian assistant Alfredo Montesso — have publicly endorsed the diminutive former Tivoli Gardens player as the man best equipped for the job at this time.
At a Jamaica team’s training session at Winchester Park yesterday, Daley repaid the coaches’ confidence by accepting the challenge with both hands.
“I am that player who they have been searching for and it’s just for me now to accept the responsibility and produce to help the team as much as possible as we move forward to Brazil 2014,” said the Preston North End (PNE) player.
Daley, 23, when cemented into that creative midfield role, would bring a refreshing change to the runners and tacklers that have characterised the heart of the team over the years.
The former Meadhaven favourite says he’s now looking to cement his place in the national set-up and to play an instrumental role in the Brazil 2014 campaign.
“Every players wants to play for his country, but it’s the decision of the coach in the end, so as a player you just have to keep in shape that whenever the call comes you are ready and available,” he noted.
It is Daley’s skills, vision and passing range which caught the eyes of PNE manager Phil Brown, who signed the former Jamaica College Manning Cupper on a two-year contract after a successful trial stint this summer.
Daley is yet to debut in the English League One, but has played two matches in the Carling Cup, playing nearly a full 90 minutes in a heart-stopping contest against Morecambe on Tuesday, which ended with PNBE winning 7-6 on penalties in knock-out tourney.
“It was a very high intensity game from both teams as we beat them in the pre-season in which I actually scored, and I was looking to score, but unfortunately I didn’t,” he told journalists.
In his other outing last month, he played about 40 minutes in a match-up against Southampton.
Daley, a star of Jamaica’s team that won the silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil, says his aim is to break into the first team of the League squad.
“I’m looking to break in as soon as possible. The coach spoke to me one-on-one and mentioned what he is looking for from me, and it’s just up to me now to just go back and work hard and get a place in the team,” he said.
Meanwhile, on day two of the team’s preparation for their away friendly international against Honduras on Tuesday, the hour-and-a-half session picked up momentum over Wednesday’s first day, with the technical staff taking the 19 players through a variety of drills that covered all main areas of play.
The training, supervised by Whitmore and Montesso, in the main saw tactical manouvres, two-team scrimmaging, team shape construction and maintenance, set-piece routines, shooting and ball possession regimens.
“We have to look at the game that we will be playing against Honduras and we want to look at a number of things going forward, plus we have to look at the players we have at our disposal, which means we have to do something new and something different,” Whitmore said after the session.
“We are basically building a team for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers and we have to start now,” he added.
While the ultimate goal is to get the team fine-tuned for next year’s CONCACAF World Cup Qualification tournament, Whitmore emphasised the importance of breaking a four-match winless streak, which started with 0-2 defeat to the USA in the Gold Cup; 0-1 loss to China, 2-5 to Ecuador and 0-2 to Colombia in friendly matches.
“Yes, we always want to win, but then again, we are on a mission and we want to accomplish it. We want to win games, but we have to lose some in the transition phase…
“We are focused on the broader picture, and that is World Cup qualification,” said the France 1998 hero.
Meanwhile, 19 players participated in yesterday’s training session and the 20-man squad should be completed for today’s exercises with the anticipated arrival of Brentford’s Marcus Bean last night — one of three England-born players invited for the Honduras assignment.
Yesterday, Daley, Dane Richards, Omar Cummings, Marvin Elliott, Nathan Smith, Damion Williams, Demar Phillips, Jason Morrison, Dwayne Miller, Jermaine Taylor, JeVaughn Watson, Shavar Thomas, Luton Shelton, Rodolph Austin, local-based Richard Edwards, Wolry Wolfe, Xavian Virgo, Keneil Moodie and Gariece McPherson were all present.
Luton Shelton, who is based in Turkey these days, did not participate in the onfield drills, but worked mostly with physical trainer Andre Waugh as he is said to be nursing a “slight hamstring niggle”.
The team is scheduled to play a practice match against National Premier League outfit Sporting Central Academy at Brancourt tomorrow before departing for San Pedro Sula, Honduras on Sunday morning.
