Work together for the common good
Dear Editor,
The ugly side of our political landscape has once again started to rear its ugly head. The campaign tactics to attack and demonise a political opponent as much as possible have swung into full gear.
A recent news item highlighted former president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Michael Stewart on a PNP platform criticising Andrew Holness.
While we may support a level of fierceness in our fight for elected positions, we cannot allow people to vilify and distort a person’s image or character to gain political mileage. It is time for a change in our politics; it cannot continue to be about winning at all costs. The party may win but Jamaica and Jamaicans will ultimately lose and the evidence of the latter is very clear, because no matter how much better we think we are than the other person, one party will never have all the answers to Jamaica’s problem at any one time.
We need to start accepting that fact, and move to a consensus of working together. Probably the PNP should take a leaf from the JLP’s action as to how Mr Holness was ushered into the leadership position, yet there were so many other candidates.
