My Kingston – Ivan Berry
Chairman of the Advisory Board for Caribbean Music Publishers Inc
What was your first impression of Kingston?
My first impression of Kingston was a sense of utmost vibrancy, and the hospitality and friendliness of the people was second to none on a global scale. I can now see why Jamaica has positively impacted the world through tourism and certainly its creative industries.
What’s your middle name?
John.
What’s your preferred beverage?
Red Stripe (smiles), what a soothing taste while listening to reggae music in Jamaica.
What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?
There were two completely different meals: ackee and salt fish in the morning at the Terra Nova All-Suite hotel, and red snapper and okra in the evenings.
Which cologne are you currently splashing?
Ed Hardy cologne; I love it.
And the last book you read?
The Art Of Worldly Wisdom.
What do you miss when you’re away from home?
Definitely my shower. I built it the way I wanted it and I absolutely love it; could stay in there for hours.
And your last bit of retail therapy?
Sneakers, sneakers and more sneakers — Adidas all the way.
Share with us your upcoming project.
My upcoming project is the development of Caribbean Music Publishing Inc, along with principals Kris Astaphan, Derek Wilkie and the amazing board that we have put together. It’s a company that I am passionate about and will prove fruitful for all involved. I am passionate about Caribbean songwriters getting what they truly deserve for their creativity and hard work. I am passionate about Caribbean songwriters finally having regulated and structured ownership in their intellectual property and using it as an investment for them and their families. An investment that is not affected by political unrest, natural disasters and any other mishaps that may occur, while a song is earning royalties in the global marketplace. This is a true asset. I am also working closely with Caribbean recording artiste Shazelle, who has now secured a recording contract with Universal Music.
Share with us your chill spot.
The best place for me to chill is definitely Discovery Bay. The hospitality afforded me by Mark and Hugh Croskery and the rest of the staff at SSL showed me a new place that I can relax and do absolutely nothing. They are amazing people — a true reflection of Jamaican hospitality. This, together with this amazing place of tranquility, was heaven.
If you could live the life of anyone in the music industry, who would it be and why?
If I could live for one day the life of anyone in the music business it would certainly be the late, great Bob Marley. He was an absolute inspiration to me and the rest of the world. He is why I am currently in the music business today and why I am so passionate about music. I listen to his music often as it teaches me life lessons in honesty, simplicity and love for all mankind. His music makes me a better person.
Finally, what’s your philosophy?
My philosophy is very simple. In my personal life: “Do good to people, be honest and be supportive of others in need”. In my business life: “to take advantage of an opportunity, you must first recognise it”.
