As Portia says, inner cities produce professionals
Dear Editor,
If we take time out to sensitise our citizens to the potential improvements in their quality of life if garrisons were to be entirely eradicated, they would be more inclined to join in the fight for true democracy.
Many of our people have been deceived to think that the garrison is designed for their own protection and benefit. However, politicians are the true beneficiaries of these arrangements.
Fundamentally, these politicians are careful not to provide any means of upward social mobility for their supporters in the garrisons.
Opposition Leader, Portia Simpson Miller has stated that inner-city communities are producing a steady supply of professionals, a testimony to what can be achieved if there is investment in human development in these areas. I am in total agreement.
We have seen many lawyers, doctors and engineers coming out of these communities. However, think how many more would be successful in legal fields if we didn’t have “professionals” like Zekes, Willie Haggart, Tesha Miller, Dudus, Bulbie, Bun Man, Tony Welsh and Dog Paw.
Let us not forget our ancestors’ struggles for Universal Adult Suffrage. People must vote to change their situation to one which allows them to chart their own course as opposed to being bound by their franchise.
