Don’t forget Walker’s service to Jamaica
Dear Editor,
Even though the former director of elections, Danville Walker, has decided to join forces with the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, his service in revolutionising Jamaica’s electoral system should not be forgotten.
Fundamentally, let us not forget that prior to Mr Walker’s management of the electoral system it was in a state of disarray. However, being the conscientious stalwart of democracy that he is, Danville Walker was resolute in his decision not only to clean up, but transform the electoral system of Jamaica to one that will create an atmosphere for free and fair elections.
I do not know Mr Walker personally, but based on the fact that he is one of the country’s few “returning residents” who has contributed significantly to the nation’s development proves that he has his country’s best interest at heart.
I can recall how assiduously Mr Walker s toiled for the implementation of the electronic voter identification system. His competence and efficiency was of such a high standard that it resulted in other countries modelling our electoral system. This, I believe, is a monumental achievement for Mr Walker and by extension, Jamaica.
Let us not cease to remember the positive contributions made to our country by a son of our soil because he has taken a decision which might not suit us all. I am sure that Mr Walker will continue to put Jamaica first in whatever he does.
