STGC, C’Bar set up semi-final showdown
Title favourites St George’s College (STGC) and Calabar High remained atop of Group H of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup with wins over Camperdown and Penwood High, respectively, at the Constant Spring Field yesterday.
St George’s defeated Camperdown 2-0, while Calabar trounced Penwood High 4-0 setting the stage for an interesting final match-up for group honours and a semi-final spot on Friday.
Both STGC and C’Bar are on six points from two games, while Camperdown and Penwood are at the bottom of the group pointless.
In the curtain raiser between Calabar and Penwood, the prolific Kyle Scott came off the bench in the 49th minute to score twice in the 54th and 60th minutes, leading Calabar to an emphatic victory.
The green-and-black-clad boys from Red Hills Road had already taken a stranglehold on the game courtesy of early goals from Saskie Daley and Shane Franklin in the 16th and 22nd minutes, respectively.
But their profligacy in front of goal and their nonchalant style after knowing that the game was won, might come back to harm them as they currently lie second in the group on goal difference and must beat St George’s on Friday to advance to the semi-final.
The Marvin Tate-coached boys have scored six times, while conceding once for a plus five goal difference compared to STGC’s plus six, leaving the ‘Light Blues’ from North Street needing only a draw to top the group.
To make matters worse for Calabar, the last time they played St George’s, they were thumped 5-0 in the Walker Cup.
Meanwhile, in the feature encounter, STGC, like they did against Calabar, scored very early in the second minute courtesy of the competition’s leading goalscorer Kenton Anderson.
Anderson packing power, skill and pace, pounced on a miskick by Camperdown’s centre half Damion Walker and easily converted little over 60 seconds in the game. The towering Walker, who started with heavy straps on his thigh, was replaced soon after.
It was Anderson’s 14th goal in the Manning Cup and he notched his 15th in the 70th minute, getting the better of the last defender and calmly slotting home. Having scored five goals in the Walker Cup Knockout competition, Anderson has taken his tally for the season to 20 goals.
But STGC didn’t have things their own way, as Camperdown rallied after going behind early and dominated most of the first half, but failed to score despite coming close on a few occasions.
However, a pep talk during the interval seemed to revive St George’s and they proceeded to dominate the second half and put the game to bed in the 70th minute. The ever-dangerous but sometime selfish Anderson found himself in a one-on-one battle with the last defender, shrugged off his challenge and easily placed his shot under the advancing goalkeeper Rashawn Patterson to seal the victory.
Had it not been for some good goalkeeping by Patterson late on, St George’s could have won by a wider margin.
The competition continues today at the Spanish Town Prison Oval with Wolmer’s Boys taking on Ascot at 1:00 pm before Jose Marti tackle Hydel High at 3:00 pm in Group I action.
Wolmer’s lead the group with three points ahead of Ascot, also on three but with an inferior goal difference. Jose Marti and Hydel will be looking for their first points in this round.
