Let the reputable come forward
Dear Editor,
Over the years, we have successfully painted such an ugly picture of politics and politicians that we view all those actively involved in politics as villains. This label and general sentiment has become so deeply entrenched that citizens with good reputation and intentions are not willing to enter the line of work for the service of their country because of the fear of being so labelled and judged.
It goes without saying that our politicians are to be held responsible for this label. However, we must realise how important politics is to our nation’s development and our individual well-being as citizens. Thus, instead of dissuading these reputable individuals from entering representational politics, we should encourage them.
Danville Walker’s decision to enter representational politics is the perfect example of what I speak. His political entry is particularly symbolic because Mr Walker is one of the few Jamaicans who studied and worked abroad and who have made a conscious decision to return home before reaching retirement age. Thus, he came with the intention to serve his country – and he has been doing it well. This is evidenced by his tremendous achievements in his tenure as director of elections and also as commissioner of customs. Undoubtedly, he executed his duties with fairness. So it cannot be honestly said that he displayed any partisan bias in his civic roles.
We must view the politics of our land as our business. Therefore, it is time for more reputable and forward-thinking Jamaicans to come to the fore, irrespective of their political persuasion.
