Champs on a roll in Urban Area netball
DEFENDING champions The Queen’s School and St Hugh’s High continued their unbeaten streak by registering convincing wins in the second round of the ISSA/Digicel Urban Area high school Junior and Senior Leagues, respectively, at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday.
The Marvette Anderson-coached Queen’s who are the current holders of the Urban and All-Island Junior titles, cruised past the Wayne Stewart-coached and previously unbeaten Camperdown, 28-14. The winners led, 7-3, 15-6, 22-11 and 28-14.
Meanwhile, the Phillip St Marie-coached St Hugh’s, the reigning Senior League champions, made light work of St Jago, 35-18. St Hugh’s led in all four quarters, 7-3, 14-12, 24-15, and 35-18.
Queen’s seniors went on a goal-scoring spree against Camperdown by scoring a comprehensive win, 68-6.
Shooters Sade Ffrench and Khadijah Williams showed no mercy on the East Kingston-based Camperdown as they received good support from their centre court players who dominated, added to some fine defensive plays.
Queen’s led comfortably in all four quarters, 16-2, 34-5, 55-6 and 68-6.
Meanwhile, the upset of the afternoon saw the Joan Walker-coached St Catherine High ending the Jennifer Brown-coached St Andrew High’s unbeaten run in the Senior League with an exciting 26-24 result to maintain their unbeaten winning ways. St Catherine led 7-4, 11-10, 21-15 and 26-24.
St Hugh’s Juniors, who are also guided by St Marie, are unbeaten as well and whipped St Jago, 45-11
It was St Hugh’s second straight win in as many starts in the second round.
In other Junior League results: Campion College beat Ardenne, 20-18; Norman Manley slipped past Holy Childhood, 21-19; St Catherine whipped Mona, 37-16, and Vauxhall scored a 31-21 win over Clan Carthy.
In other Senior League results: Bridgeport defeated Wolmer’s, 33-21; Excelsior got past St Andrew Technical, 24-22, and Tarrant and Meadowbrook tied, 33-33.
