Russell puts Windies A in sight of win

GROS ISLET, St Lucia (CMC) — Exciting all-rounder Andre Russell’s five-wicket haul coupled with a crucial half-century stand between opener Danza Hyatt and Jonathan Carter, put West Indies A in sight of victory on the third day of the second four-day ‘Test’ against Bangladesh A yesterday.

Russell snatched five for 36 to help rout Bangladesh A for 187, after they resumed the day at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on 40 without loss.

Chasing 214 for victory, West Indies A plunged to 34 for two before Hyatt anchored two important partnerships to repair the innings.

The right-hander, who was 52 not out at the close, put on 39 with Nkrumah Bonner (21) for the third wicket before adding a further 66 for the fourth wicket with Carter, who was unbeaten on an attacking 45 at the close.

Hyatt has so far hit seven fours and a six off 100 balls, while the left-handed Carter has stroked five fours and two sixes off a mere 46 balls.

The partnership put Bangladesh A on the backfoot after they seemed set to run through the top of the Windies A batting.

Earlier, Russell prised out both openers as Bangladesh A slipped to 41 for three, losing three early wickets for just one run.

He returned to destroy the middle order as he finished with match figures of nine for 78.

Sohrawardi Shuvo top scored with 29 not out while Nasir Hossain (29), Roqibul Hasan (28), Mithun Ali (26) and Jahurul Islam (25) all got starts but failed to carry on.
