DUBAI, UAE – Qatar Airways announced the purchase of 50 Airbus A320neo aircraft yesterday, in addition to five A380 superjumbos, shortly after the boss of the Gulf carrier said the deal had hit an “impasse.”
Akbar Al Baker, the chief executive officer of the Gulf carrier, said the airline was taking options for 30 A320neos and three A380 long-haul airliners, at the signing ceremony at the Dubai Airshow.
The value of the firm deal is US$6.4 billion ($550 billion) at list price, Airbus commercial director John Leahy said.
Some analysts had expected Gulf carriers, which have been big spenders in recent years, to buy fewer planes this year.
