Lilliput Rovers upset MoBay Utd in St James KO
ROSE HALL, St James — Promoted Division One team Lilliput Rovers created the first major upset of the St James FA Captain’s Bakery Knock Out on Tuesday when they eliminated defending champions Montego Bay United, 2-1, at the Wyndham field.
Goalkeeper Garen Downey scored a 21st-minute own-goal to give Lilliput Rovers a 2-0 lead after Rayon Dixon had given them a sixth-minute lead.
Ajohn Barker pulled one back for Montego Bay United in the 60th, but that was as close as they came as Lilliput moved on to join Reggae Youths, who also won on Tuesday, along with Western Confederation Super League teams Wadadah FC and Tomorrow’s People, who won on Sunday.
Reggae Youths eliminated Montego Bay Boys Club, 2-1, with goals from Garfield Hall and Nieko Taylor in 75th (penalty). Lovel Jonas had scored for Boys Club.
On Sunday’s opening day, Derrick Allen Jermaine Cooper scored doubles for Wadadah and Tomorrow’s People, respectively, as they scored 5-0 wins to move to the second round.
Wadadah beat Melbourne FC with Oneil Selvyn, Stephen Irving and Damion Reid also getting onto the scoresheet.
Cooper scored his brace in the second half after Tomorrow’s People led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Gregory Tape and Damion Francis, while Phillip McDonald got the fifth goal in the 78th.
The competition continues today with two more games: Catherine Hall and Kempshot will meet at Westgreen, while Little Miami and Revelation will rumble at the UDC field.
The first round will end tomorrow with Violet Kickers taking on Fogo United at the UDC field.
