Springer hails Russell’s nine-wicket haul
GROS ISLET, St Lucia (CMC) — All-rounder Andre Russell’s nine-wicket match haul in the second four-day Test which finished Tuesday, has drawn praise from West Indies ‘A’ team head coach Hendy Springer.
Russell snatched five for 36 in Bangladesh ‘A’ second innings on Monday to restrict the tourists to 187 all out. The performance followed up his four for 24 in the first innings when Bangladesh got 155 on the first day at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
“He has bowled really well in this match and in fact I think he should have gotten 10 wickets in the match and not nine,” said Springer, a former Barbados off-spinner.
“In the first innings after he got four wickets he began to get a bit impatient so he did not get that fifth wicket but he returned and bowled really well in the second innings to get five.”
Russell has emerged in recent months as a valuable resource for the senior West Indies, with his strong all-round ability.
He made an inauspicious start to international cricket in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, but burst to life during the World Cup earlier this year when he snatched four wickets and struck a cameo 49 against England in Chennai.
Since then he has been a virtual fixture in the Windies senior side for the shorter versions of the game.
Springer also praised the Beausejour pitch saying that while it looked “brown” it was “firmer” than he had known it to be and that the “bounce and carry” were good for the fast bowlers.
