My Kingston – Usain Bolt

Style Observer

World record holder for the 100 and 200 metres. Digicel Jamaica ambassador. Jamaica Tourist Board ambassador — Fastest man alive. What was your first impression of Kingston?

It is a lot noisier than the country.

What do you miss the most when you’re not in Kingston?

The entertainment which changes based on the time of year. During the track and field season, for example, the vibe is different from when I am on a short break each year.

What would you do if you were Mayor (of Kingston) for a day?

Try to remove all the street children and put them somewhere safe so that they can develop into productive individuals.

What was the last memorable meal you ate in Kingston?

I would have to say the jerked chicken spring rolls and the pork platter at Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records.

What is your beverage of choice?

Gatorade.

What was your last bit of retail therapy?

I am a car person, so I have a few.

What’s your favourite automobile?

Right now my Nissan Skyline GTS.

You’ve expressed an interest in a possible football career after you leave track and field behind. But if you weren’t in the sports field, what profession would you consider going into?

Sports has been my life since birth; I can’t envision not being in sports.

You’re a fan of dancehall music but what artiste from a completely different genre of music would people be surprised to know that you like?

I’m a big fan of Jay Z’s music and I listen to a lot of house music when I am in Europe.

What annoys you most?

Having to wake up early.

When and where last were you the most happiest?

Defending my 200-metre title in South Korea.

Where are your favourite chill spots on the island?

In Trelawny, once I want to chill out, nowhere does it for me like home. To be very honest, I do not get much opportunity to chill, but when I do I head out of town to Trelawny. Of course, for work I get to go to lots of places, but most times I am not there long enough to really enjoy them.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Rihanna.

What would be your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?

Experience the night life.

What’s your philosophy?

Work hard and be disciplined in whatever you do.
