Surprise Guyana, Antigua have tough WC openers
NEW YORK CITY, New York (CMC) — Surprise teams Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda have been handed tough opening assignments in the next round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Guyana will be away to giants Mexico in Group B on June 12 next year, while Antigua travel to the United States to face the CONCACAF powerhouses in a Group A fixture.
In shock results, Guyana finished on top of Group B in the last round of qualifiers, eliminating 2006 finalists Trinidad and Tobago.
Antigua, meanwhile, emerged top of Group F which included strong French side Haiti.
Also in Group A on Match Day One, Caribbean champions Jamaica will take on Guatemala in Kingston.
Four days later, Jamaica will travel to St John’s to clash with fellow Caribbean Football Union side Antigua. Guyana, meanwhile, will host Costa Rica in Georgetown.
