Three hope to join STETHS in D’Cup semis
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Three schools led by defending champions Rusea’s High will need only a point today to join early qualifiers St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboys football competition as the quarter-finals end today with four games.
With STETHS already assured of their spot after consecutive wins and Cedric Titus High and Petersfield High both out of contention, five teams are chasing three spots in the semi-finals set for next weekend.
Glenmuir High are on four points in second place behind STETHS in Group Two and need only a point when they play the leaders at STETHS today.
A win for STETHS would open the door for Frome Technical who are on one point but could advance with a big win over Cedric Titus at Frome.
In Group One, both leaders Paul Bogle High and defending champions Rusea’s are on four points each and a draw against Westmoreland schools Grange Hill and Petersfield High, would see them safely through.
With Petersfield having nothing to play for except pride and Rusea’s seeking to top the group, the Hanover school could go on a goal hunt.
Grange Hill put themselves back into contention with a last-minute come-from-behind 2-1 win over Petersfield on Wednesday and will be going at Paul Bogle from the opening whistle.
After going down 1-0 to Rusea’s on Saturday, Grange Hill’s season looked to be all over before Dale Brown produced two goals in the final 27 minutes to revive their hopes of making it to the semi-finals for the first time.
Paul Bogle are also seeking their first berth in the top-four of the daCosta Cup and will start favourites with only a point needed after holding Rusea’s goalless on Wednesday at the same venue.
After scoring just one goal in their last two games after scoring 11 in three previous outings, Rusea’s will hope to take out their frustrations on a Petersfield team that has imploded since losing their starting goalkeeper Omar Anderson.
Anderson was expelled from school following an altercation with another student and his last appearance was against Clarendon College in the Inter-zone round.
Last year, STETHS beat Glenmuir 2-1 in Santa Cruz, but today they will face a much stronger team that until Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Frome Technical had outscored all the other teams from the start of the Inter-zone round.
Noel Johnson, the leading scorer since the start of the Inter-zone round with 10 goals, was frustrated by the physical Frome defenders on Wednesday and will seek to resume his quest for the Golden Boots.
Kevon Farquharson will lead the STETHS attack along with Jamel Sinclair and Akeemo Palmer.
If they are to have any chances of advancing, depending on the results from Santa Cruz, Frome must win big when they take on Cedric Titus.
Despite not scoring in their two game sin the quarter-finals, Frome had scored 54 goals in the previous two rounds and will be led today by Kevin Williams, Kenardo Cooper, Kawayne Wilson and Kevon Blake.
