Why the turnaround, Dr Phillips?
Dear Editor,
Dr Peter Phillips who leads the PNP’s electioneering campaign should give the people of Jamaica a valid reason why his party is shying away from a debate between its leader Portia Simpson Miller and the JLP’s Andrew Holness. Peter must know because he has himself experienced this particular piece of artless dodging.
For those who do not know or can’t recall: In 2006 the PSOJ and the Media Association tried to arrange a debate between Mrs Simpson Miller and Dr Phillips to help determine who was fittest to lead the PNP and the then government. The debate never took place because at the appointed time Mrs Simpson Miller pulled out “citing a clash of schedules, including overseas appearances and the uncertainty surrounding the event”.
In response Dr Phillips then said: “It is my fervent belief that all aspirants for the post of president of the People’s National Party, and ultimately prime minister of Jamaica, have a responsibility to share their vision for national development and make themselves available to be questioned in a forum such as a national debate as proposed by the PSOJ and the MAJ (Media Association of Jamaica),”
How can he now defend the PNP’s present position?
