Windies women whip Pakistan, claim ICC crown

DHAKA, Bangladesh (CMC) — Deandra Dottin’s whirlwind 95, followed up by off-spinner Anisa Mohammed’s seven-wicket haul, propelled West Indies to a crushing 130-run win over Pakistan in the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament here yesterday.

The 20-year-old Dottin smashed five fours and seven sixes off just 83 balls as West Indies raced to 250 for five off their 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Mohammed then produced a devastating spell of seven for 14 from 8.3 overs to send the Pakistani women crashing from 65 for one in the 14th over, to 120 all out, losing their last nine wickets for 55 runs.

With the win, West Indies ensured they finished the tournament unbeaten after winning all of their group games and the semi-final clash earlier in the week.

The Caribbean side were given a sound, if not spectacular start by the prolific Stafanie Taylor and Juliana Nero who put on 45

off 55 balls.

Taylor, as expected, dominated the stand, stroking 32 from 35 balls with six fours before falling in the 10th over, bowled by fast bowler Asmavia Iqbal.

Shanel Daley fell cheaply for 20 but that paved the way for the first of two exciting partnerships that were orchestrated by Dottin.

Nero, who hammered nine fours and a six in an attractive 63 off 98 balls, put on 59 with Dottin for the third wicket.

When she and captain Merissa Aguilleira (5) fell in quick succession to leave the Windies on 141 for four in the 39th, Dottin and Stacy-Ann King (27 not out), added a frenetic 94 off 57 balls for the fifth wicket, to end the innings strongly.

Left-arm seamer Daley then claimed Nidar Dar (2) with the score on 16 in the fifth over but opener Qanita Jalil stroked a top score of 53 in helping to post 49 for the second wicket with Marina Iqbal (16).

Off-spinner Taylor broke the stand by getting Marina Iqbal and any hopes of a fightback were quickly quelled with the introduction of Mohammed.

She trapped Bismah Maroof (1) lbw in the 17th over and then grabbed the prized wicket of Jalil, after she had faced 61 balls and counted six fours.

Nain Abidi (20) and captain Sana Mir (17) stemmed the tide with a 35-run, sixth wicket stand but once Mohammed removed Mir and Asmavia Iqbal (0) in the 34th over, the Windies were on top.

Mohammed then wasted little time in cleaning up the tail to give Windies victory and take the Player-of-the-Match award.

Taylor was voted Player-of-the-Series.
