Spartan upstage Naggo Head on Super League debut
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Debutants Spartan Athletic began life in the South Central Confederation Super League with an upset 2-1 victory over Naggo Head on Sunday at Turners Oval in Chapelton.
Mathew Shand did the trick for the Chapelton side by notching the winner on the stroke of full time.
Eric Barton had shot Spartan into a 25th-minute lead, but Shevon James equalised 10 minutes later to ensure that the teams entered the break on level terms.
Former champions Naggo Head, however, failed to keep the hosts at bay as Shand breached their defence to score the winner with virtually the last kick of the game.
The result means that Spartan, who have secured back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons from the Clarendon Division One and Major League, are now the early leaders of Zone B after favourites Meadows and Newlands were held 1-1 in their opening fixtures against Downs and Super Action, respectively.
Meanwhile, defending champions Rivoli United scraped to a 1-0 win over parish mates Dela Vega City to join fellow St Catherine team Bodles atop Zone A on three points following a similar victory against Monymusk at Bodles.
Promoted teams Royal Lakes and New Green are next on a point apiece after battling to a 1-1 tie in their on Saturday’s opening day.
