Lewis says P’More nearing title form
PORTMORE United coach Calvin Lewis reckons their back-to-back End-of-Round final success is an indication they are starting to rediscover their trophy-winning formula.
The St Catherine side eased past Tivoli Gardens, 2-0, last Monday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to add the first End-of-Round title to the second-round trophy they won at the same venue last season.
They then went on to complete a fabulous week after replacing Tivoli atop the Red Stripe Premier League table with a 2-1 win over South Central neighbours Sporting Central Academy at Brancourt on Sunday.
Said Lewis: “The objective is really to win some trophies. The club didn’t do all that well last season, so this season the players really want to go out there and give it their best shot.”
The former Highgate United coach added: “The players have been working with me since I started, so now they have (realised) what I brought to the club is really working. They are absorbing what I am passing on to them.”
Respected local coach Geoffrey Maxwell, in a pre-season interview with this reporter, Portmore again is struggling to find form this season — arguing that a lack of mature personalities could seriously thwart their title charge.
The four-time premiership winners — who last won the league in 2008 — are, however, enjoying a successful season after 12 games and, barring a major collapse, are shaping out to be the main threat to Tivoli’s crown.
“This is a young team, with players who want to play,” Lewis told the Observer following their latest win at Brancourt.
“We have players with a lot of experience at the youth level. Most of them have played in the Premier League before or in the Under-21 competition, so once they follow instructions it will be OK.
“They have successfully completed one round already and the more games they play, the better they will get. They are developing,” the former Police National coach noted.
Of the 12 matches played, Portmore have won a league-high six, drawn three, while losing the same amount to sit a point clear of defending champions Tivoli.
One player who has been a focal point in their early season success is Tremaine Stewart.
Playing either as an attacking midfielder, or as the lone striker, the former Eltham High Manning Cup star has so far displayed true maturity and flair — capping a good first-round performance with both goals against Tivoli in the end-of-round decider.
Said Lewis of the wily attacker: “Tremaine is a handful for any defence line; most teams have to use four players to mark him. He has been doing the right thing this season.
“Sometimes he can pick up (the ball) and lay it off and there are times when he will break beyond the defence.”
