“Illiterate”man on ganja charges, fined for $40,000
MONTEGO BAY, St James – A man who admitted that he couldn’t read, refused an offer from a Resident Magistrate to read the forensic report for him, when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court last week.
Darwin Campbell protested the weight of the ganja he was held with, insisting that it was “only half pound” of the drug instead of the 26 pounds the police had claimed he was held with.
The forensic report however showed the weight as just under 14 pounds and even then Campbell said he did not have that amount, as he accused the police of adding more to what he was found in his possession.
In court Senior Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris asked the accused man if he wanted her to read the report for him but he turned down the offer.
He was subsequently fined $40,000 after pleading guilty to possession of and dealing in ganja .
