Green Pond score upset win over Rhodes Hall
RHODES HALL, Hanover — Debutants Green Pond High school scored an upset one point (38-37) win over Rhodes Hall High for their second win in the Under-19 section of the ISSA/KFC Western Conference high schools’ boys basketball league at Rhodes Hall Thursday.
A surge between the second and third quarters took Green Pond from a deficit to the lead that they managed to hold on to in the exciting fourth period despite being outscored by seven points by the home teams.
Green Pond, who are taking part in the competition for the first time, had beaten former champions Muschett High last week and are now on six points from four games, tied with leaders and defending champions Cornwall College who have won all three games played so far.
Rhodes Hall led by three points (9-6) after the first quarter, but the St James school rebounded in the second to lead 17-13 at half and extended their lead to 28-20 going into the final period.
Christopher Thompson led Green pond with 11 points and two rebounds, while Romario Doyley scored eight points.
Leon Moncrieff scored 18 points, eight steals and two assists for the home team, Brandon Cox scored eight points, while Oshawn Davis had three points, 16 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
Green Pond, meanwhile, continued to struggle in the Under-16 section, losing their third of four games as they were badly beaten (69-8) by Holland High.
Robert Moss had a season-high 34 points and 22 rebounds for Holland, while Hugh Smith had 12 points as they restricted Green pond to no points in the second and third quarters, leading 14-4, 30-4 and 55-4 after three quarters.
