Breaking down garrisons
Dear Editor,
The first step towards dismantling garrisons should not be only a symbolic walk by all candidates through their respective constituencies, but rather, should be accompanied by Jamaicans encouraged to wear their party’s colours proudly and fearlessly everywhere. All this in the manner Americans proclaim their political preference with bumper stickers, and a determined effort encouraged by all candidates to persuade their supporters to respect their opponents’ rights in that regard, just as they would wish theirs respected.
When we can return to the days when that was the widespread practice throughout the land, then, and only then, will we be able to recognise and acknowledge that the garrisons have indeed been dismantled.
