Jarrett Park manager demands respect from ISSA
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Up to yesterday the management of Jarrett Park had not officially received a request for the use of the facility for the staging of the first leg of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Olivier Shield between daCosta Cup champions Rusea’s High and Manning Cup champions St George’s College tomorrow afternoon.
When contacted yesterday, Adrian ‘Harry’ Grant, chairman of the Jarrett Park Management Committee said they were fed up with the way his organisation was being treated.
“No one has called and asked for the venue, we only hear that games are being played there when it is announced on the radio or in newspapers,” he said.
The process to use the facility is that a request has to be made first but this has not been happening, Grant told the Observer.
He said he has spoken to Raymond ‘Moonie’ Kerr, the ISSA representative in Montego Bay, more than once. “I have spoken to him in the office about this on at least two occasions,” Grant said.
Efforts to contact Kerr for a comment yesterday were unsuccessful.
But competitions officer of ISSA, George Forbes, told the Observer yesterday that he wasn’t aware there was a problem, but said the Kingston office would act without delay in forwarding a letter of formal request to Grant if he so desires.
The game would be allowed to go ahead, but Grant pointed out but said the procedure must be observed in the future.
Meanwhile, he said there would be an inspection of the facilities and any work needed would be done to get the field in as good a shape as possible.
Several teams had protested the conditions of the field and as late as the playing of the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup, officials from Glenmuir High had expressed dissatisfaction with the field.
Glenmuir had played eventual champions Rusea’s High in the semi-finals.
Most concerns were about the cricket pitch in the middle of the playing surface which had holes left behind after games had been played there during the period of consistent rainfall and had not been rolled out.
Grant said he had heard about the hard state of the pitch but had not heard anything about the holes.
The daCosta Cup final which was won by Rusea’s over St Elizabeth Technical was moved to the Montego Bay Sports Complex last Saturday.
The prohibitive cost of using the Montego Bay Sports Complex has ruled it out of use for more games.
