Village coach upbeat after morale-boosting win
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Village United coach Rohan Robinson is hoping Sunday’s come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Humble Lion will be the fillip his team needs to revive their Red Stripe Premier League season.
The win was only their second of the season, and while it did not lift them off the foot of the table, it did narrow the gap between them and the safe zone to eight points.
A buoyant Robinson now wants his players to use this result as a springboard to kick-start their season.
He said: “We are still at the bottom of the table, but this victory is certainly a morale booster for the players, the coaches, the management team and the supporters.
“Going forward we can now (build) on this victory because we definitely have to make a statement this round.”
“We are under pressure from the parish, management and the supporters, so to come away with three points on the road is really a great feeling. We just need to be more consistent now and score our chances and we will be OK,” added Robinson.
After only 18 minutes into the game at Effortville, Village seemed certain to be heading for a league-high 11th defeat following close range strikes from Omar Walters and Gregory Morgan.
But a bizarre moment of indecisiveness from Humble Lion goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie just past the half-hour mark allowed Shaunavan McKenzie to bring Village back into the game with a simple tap-tin.
The lethal Dino Williams would then take advantage of another piece of mediocre defending from the hosts to pull the Trelawny side level with a close-range drive on 51 minutes.
One minute later, Village were reduced to 10 men following the ejection of Valbert Campbell for serious foul play.
