CC hold off Green Pond in ISSA/KFC basketball
GREEN POND, St James — Defending champions Cornwall College survived a late rush by hosts Green Pond High to win their Under-16 ISSA/KFC Western boys high school basketball game at Green Pond on Monday.
Cornwall held on to win by just three points, 51-48, as they swept both matches after an easier 61-13 win in the Under-16 section earlier.
The wins saw Cornwall improve their record to four wins in either section to go to eight points, taking over the lead in the Under-19 section, while drawing level with Herbert Morrison Technical in the Junior section.
Green Pond are in second place in the Under-19 section on seven points from five games and joint third in the Under-16 section with six points, the same as Muschett High.
After a slow start that saw the teams tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, Cornwall then trailed by two points, 23-21, at half-time before outscoring the home team, 30-25, in the second half.
Christopher Ray Smith led Cornwall College with 27 points and seven rebounds; Tevin Brown scored 12 points, along with three rebounds, three steals and six assists, while Semoy Noble had a big game defensively as despite scoring just two points, he grabbed 15 rebounds and had 11 blocked shots.
Christopher Thompson was the topscorer for Green Pond with 21 points and 10 steals, while Shaquille Wynn had 12 points.
Cornwall had an easier time in the Under-16 game as Kyle Schloss scored 17 points and had six rebounds; Hakeem Grant scored 13 points and had five rebounds and three blocked shots, while Davane Hall scored 10 points and had five rebounds.
Three games will be played tomorrow. Holland High will host Muschett in both sections, while Herbert Morrison Technical will host Frome in an Under-16 game.
