Hillel win Schools Swim Champs
HILLEL Prep School topped the Caprisun Preparatory and Primary Schools Swim Meet Saturday at the National Stadium Pool, with Jada Newell of Sts Peter and Paul Prep accounting for two of the four meet records.
Giselle Burrowes, Ella McConnell, Anita Agudello, Dmitri Moore and Justin Gay sparked Hillel to 346 points, with the girls alone amassing 209 of those points.
Newell, who broke the meet record in the Girls 11-12 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, clocking 42.91 seconds and 33.49 seconds respectively, spearheaded Sts Peter and Paul to second place with 327 points.
Mona Preparatory, led by Deandra Reynolds, Yared McDonald and Chay Stewart, finished third with 322 points.
It was a nail-biting contest to the end, with the top three schools scoring over 300 points.
Sydoni Young of Apex and Jada Campbell of Creative Kids Learning Academy broke the other two meet records.
Young swam 35.61 seconds to shatter the Girls 11-12 50m butterfly record, erasing the old mark of 38.59 seconds.
Campbell set a new standard in the Girls 6 & Under 50m breaststroke, timing 54.99 seconds to best the previous record of 55.52 seconds.
Wolmer’s Prep placed fourth scoring 179 points, ahead of Excelsior Primary (175 points), Vaz Prep School (140 points), Emanuel Christian Academy (134 points), and Porter’s Centre for Knowledge (126 points).
The other 11 schools with points were all under 100, with St Hugh’s Preparatory finishing in ninth place with 90 points and Creative Kids Learning Academy in 10th place scoring 87 points.
Giselle Burrowes shone for Hillel as she won the Girls 7-8 50m freestyle in a time of 44.41 seconds, featured in the gold medal performance in the 200m freestyle (3:18.82) and was the silver medallist in the 50m backstroke won by Porter’s Centre for Knowledge Haliyn Mehrri-Brown (56.14 seconds).
Burrowes swam 58.33 seconds for the runner-up spot with Celine Samuels of St Peter and Paul finishing third in a time of 59.09 seconds.
Apart from Newell and Samuels, St Peter and Paul added points significantly from Raziya Williamson, Shante Scott-Williams, Naomi Eaton, Joseph Richards, Jordane Payne, and Zurich Foreman.
The 2011 swimming calendar ends with the Christmas Open Swimming Championships on December 16-18 at the National Stadium.
Meanwhile, the annual general meeting of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica will be held tonight at 7:00 at the Jamaica Olympic Association, 9 Cunningham Avenue.
