Lucea Flames to contest NBL-West
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A team from Hanover will, for the first time, contest a national basketball league when the National Basketball League-West gets underway early next year.
This, after Lucea Flames won the Western Basketball Association’s Division One title last weekend.
Led by season MVP Craig Dorman, Flames beat Granville Wolfpack 64-55 on Sunday as they rebounded from Saturday’s 60-65 loss — their first of the season after winning the first game 66-56 the previous weekend.
Lucea Flames, who also became the first club from the parish to win a title, will join Sav Hawks, the previous winners as the two clubs to be promoted when the new NBL season gets underway.
Dorman scored 21 points on Sunday, including three free throws in the last minute to seal the victory as Wolfpack’s challenge faded as the game progressed.
Dorman’s free throw were set up by a steal under his own basket by Flames’ Sheldon Myrie along with a field goal by Julian Walker who scored 17 points.
Flames had to play most of the fourth quarter without two of the big men after Cecil Cole and Cordel Gordon both fouled out. However, Wolfpack managed only to draw level several times late in the game and trailed by just two points 56-58 with one minute 25 seconds to go.
Flames led 19-8 after the first quarter, but a rally by Granville saw them close the gap to three points 31-28 at half time. The gap was five points going into the fourth quarter with Flames up 49-44.
Andre Uter, who won the top scorer award, led Granville with 21 points.
