Spanish Town gun battle subsides
THE gun battle which raged between police and gunmen in Spanish Town this afternoon has subsided.
The police said the “fierce gun battle” took place between members of a police patrol team and criminals from the Klansman gang in the Rivoli, Ravensworth areas of Spanish Town, and sections of the Rio Cobre, also near to Spanish Town.
“While the gun battle has subsided, the police are maintaining a strong presence in the affected areas and are asking persons who live in or near to the areas of conflict to be careful and vigilant,” a news release said.
Students and staff of St Jago High School – the place the gunmen ran to in their attempts to elude the police – were escorted off the compound by police personnel.
Earlier reports of students taken as hostages are totally unfounded, the police said.
The situation is being closely monitored.
