JMMB jumps in as swimming charts new course
Martin Lyn was returned unopposed as president of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica Wednesday night at its annual general meeting (AGM) held at the offices of the Jamaica Olympic Association, Cunningham Avenue.
Lyn took up the post last year November after former president John Eyre, a pilot, accepted an overseas assignment in Qatar and would not have been able to complete his two years. With the accounts also unaudited, the association decided to put off the AGM at that time and gave Lyn the thumbs up to occupy the presidency for a year.
“(I am) energised about undertaking the task of bringing more focus to aquatics. 2012 will be another great year for the ASAJ as we continue to overcome challenges and grow, with the result of having another sport to do Jamaica proud,” Lyn said.
Vice-president of Water Polo, Lance Rochester, honorary secretary Carol Thompson and assistant secretary/treasurer Paul Campbell were also returned unopposed.
Mark Jones got 28 out of 45 votes to retain his post as first vice-president, while Richard Hopkins replaced Jones as treasurer.
Allan Marsh won 35 of 45 to stay as vice-president responsible for swimming, while Diahann Campbell got 26 of 45 to remain as vice-present for synchronised swimming.
Lyn’s reappointment follows the securing of Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Ltd as a sponsor.
“They have agreed to refurbish and expand the existing control room which is the hub for the collection and dissemination of information for all our swim meets,” he said.
The financial institution presented a cheque to the association last week for the refurbishing which will be completed in one month and will be branded as the “JMMB Control Booth”.
JMMB has also indicated a willingness to become more involved in the development of swimming in Jamaica, despite current economic constraints.
“We commend JMMB, a forward thinking company, for coming on board at this time and look forward to the completion of the JMMB Control Booth,” Lyn said.
