OFFICIALS of the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) have reserved comment on last night’s general election results until after the official recount which begins today.

Last night, while not making any official declarations after the last of the ballot counts trickled in an EOJ representative said the official recount could last as long as two to three days, emphasising that the results which showed the People’s National Party ahead were “preliminary”. Last night at the close of counting, the PNP had toppled the Jamaica Labour Party from power, winning 41 to 22 seats of the 63 parliamentary seats which were up for grabs.

In the meantime, the Organisation of American States Electoral Observation Mission (OAS/EOM), which scrutinised the conduct of the polls yesterday, will today, through its Ambassador Lisa Shoman, chief of mission for the OASEOM Jamaica, discuss the preliminary observations made by the team of 28 election observers from 16 countries. The post-mortem will be held at The Courtleigh Hotel and Suites on Knutsford Boulevard in the capital at 11:00 am.
