Exhibition football game to ‘ring in’ 2012
THE annual New Year’s Day Entertainer, Masters and Celebrities football match will take place tomorrow at Buttercup Park, with the former taking on a selected Mona football team starting at 3:00 pm.
The event, which started over 40 years ago by present organiser Clive ‘Busy’ Campbell and the late Jackie Bell, came about out of a need for players to ‘ring’ in the new year with their favourite game.
The match was initially played at the Dynamic Oval (now Bell/Chung Oval) but the venue was switched after more than a decade, as according to Campbell, unwanted individuals wanted to spoil the occasion.
“But with the blessing of Gerry and Richard Murray and Peter Moses we moved the event to Buttercup Park in 1988 and that’s where it has remained since,” he said.
The Entertainer, Masters and Celebrities side will include a host of personalities including Courtney Walsh, Peter Prendergast, Audley Boyd, Ian Burnett, Lance Whittaker, Ralston Hyman, Lincoln Taffe, Marvin Chin, Andrew Price, Lenworth Hyde, Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, Alfredo Montesso among others.
The Mona team, meantime, should comprise the Murray brothers, Moses along with his sons Dominic and Jordan, Nick Ziadie, Howard McIntosh, Stewart Stephenson, Louis Matalon and Khalil Johnson.
