All set for Wray & Nephew bar domino tourney
THE third staging of the Wray & Nephew White Over Proof Rum-sponsored Kingston and St Andrew Bar Pairs Domino competition is scheduled to get underway on Sunday with the playing of two matches, beginning at 1:00 pm.
The matches scheduled are Comfitanya Sport Bar vs Lovers Pub and Ambassador Sport Bar vs View Star’s Lounge.
Defending champions of the Kingston and St Andrew Region are Pieces Lounge, who defeated Sparrow Roose in the final before going on to capture the Champion of Champions title by defeating Jacques Mid-Way Bar from Portland, who were the champions of Portland and St Thomas.
According to president of the Jamaica National Domino Association Limited (JNDAL) Patrick Austin, “Last year the competition was a very successful one and drew a lot of domino fans at matches on Sundays.
“This year we’re hoping that the turnout of spectators will be much bigger as there will be a lot of exciting matches being played,” Austin said.
The president added that he hoped to expand the competition to other bars — not just in Kingston, but also in rural parishes.
Meanwhile Gresford Henry who is the general secretary of the association, said there would be four clusters of five bars each, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals knock-out play-offs.
He said the winning bar will receive a cash award of $50,000, along with the Champions Trophy; second place $30,000; third $15,000, while the most valuable pair (MVP) for each of the four cluster will collect $3,000 each.
